AFTER INSTALLATION

Turning Your Solar On

Your panels are installed—but you can't flip the switch just yet. Here's why, and what happens before you start generating power.

Installation Complete

Your panels are mounted, inverter installed, and all electrical connections made—but you can't turn it on yet.

Final electrical inspection of a solar system

Final Inspection

A city inspector verifies that the installation meets all local building codes and safety requirements.

Utility Approval (PTO)

Your utility company reviews the system and grants Permission to Operate—the official green light.

Flip the Switch

Once PTO is received, your system goes live. Start generating clean solar power and watch your savings grow.

IMPORTANT

Installed ≠ Active

Just because your solar panels are on your roof doesn't mean you can start using them. Before your system can generate power, you need official approval from your utility company.

This is called Permission to Operate (PTO), and it's a critical step that ensures your system is safely connected to the electrical grid.

Why PTO Matters

Utility needs to verify your system meets grid requirements
Your meter may need to be upgraded for net metering
Safety inspection ensures proper interconnection
Legal requirement before exporting power to the grid
Turning on without PTO could void your warranty or violate regulations
WE'VE GOT YOU COVERED

Your Installer Handles Everything

You don't need to call the utility company or file any paperwork. Your SunLink verified installer manages the entire PTO process for you.

Submit Interconnection Application

Your installer prepares and submits all required documentation to your utility company on your behalf.

Coordinate Meter Upgrade

If your meter needs to be replaced for net metering, your installer schedules this with the utility.

Receive & Share PTO

Once approved, your installer notifies you immediately. You'll receive written confirmation that it's safe to activate.

Typical PTO Timelines by Region

Fast Utilities1-2 weeks

Some utilities, especially smaller municipal ones, process quickly

Average Utilities2-4 weeks

Most major utilities fall into this range

Slow Utilities4-8+ weeks

Some utilities have significant backlogs during busy solar seasons

TIMELINE

PTO Timelines Vary

How quickly you receive Permission to Operate depends entirely on your location and utility company. This is out of your installer's control.

During peak solar season (spring and summer), utility companies often have longer backlogs. Your installer will keep you updated on the status and push the process forward wherever possible.
