Installation Day
The day your solar system gets installed is exciting! Here's exactly what to expect so you're fully prepared.
A Typical Install Day
Most solar installations are completed in a single day. Here's how it typically unfolds.
Crew Arrives
The installation team arrives with equipment. They'll introduce themselves, review the plan, and set up ladders and safety equipment.
Racking Installation
Mounting hardware is secured to your roof. This involves attaching rails and flashing to create a watertight connection.
Panel Mounting
Solar panels are carried to the roof and secured to the racking system. Wiring is run between panels.
Electrical Work
The inverter is installed (often in garage or near electrical panel). Wiring is connected and the system is tied to your home's electrical.
Testing & Cleanup
Crew tests connections, verifies everything is working, cleans up the job site, and walks you through the system.
How Long Does Installation Take?
Standard residential solar installations are typically completed in a single day (6-10 hours).
Adding battery storage increases complexity. Some crews complete it in one long day; others split into two.
Very large systems (15+ kW), multiple roof faces, or main panel upgrades may require additional time.
What Can Affect Timing?
While most installations go smoothly, a few factors can extend the timeline.
Battery Storage
Adding batteries requires additional electrical work, breaker installation, and integration testing.
Weather Conditions
Rain, high winds, or extreme heat can delay installation for safety reasons. Your installer will reschedule if needed.
Roof Complexity
Multiple roof planes, dormers, skylights, or steep pitches take longer to work around safely.
Electrical Panel Upgrades
Older homes may need a main panel upgrade to handle solar, which adds half a day or more.
