When to Upgrade Your Electrical Panel

Your electrical panel is the brain of your home's electrical system. If it can't handle the added load of solar, battery, and modern appliances, you'll need an upgrade before installation.

Signs You Need an Upgrade

Your panel is rated at 100 amps or less (most solar + battery systems need 200 amps)
You're adding solar + battery storage + EV charger
Your breaker box is full with no available breaker slots
You have an older Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or fuse-type panel (safety hazard)
You're experiencing frequent breaker trips
You're planning to electrify your home (heat pump, induction cooktop, etc.)

Panel Capacity Guide

100A

Not ideal — may need upgrade for solar + battery

150A

Marginal — may work for solar only, but not solar + battery + EV

200A

Standard — sufficient for most solar + battery installations

320A/400A

Future-proof — handles solar + battery + EV + full home electrification

Typical Cost Range

$1,500 - $4,000
