Roof Compatibility

Is your roof ready for solar?

Most roofs are — but a few need extra planning. Here's a quick guide to what works out of the box and what usually needs attention first.

Great for solar

  • Asphalt shingle

The most common residential roof — panels mount cleanly with flashed attachments and a 25+ year lifespan.

  • Standing-seam metal

Ideal for solar. Panels clamp directly to the seams with zero roof penetrations.

  • Concrete or clay tile

Works well with tile-specific hooks and hardware — common across the Southwest.

  • Flat / low-slope (TPO, EPDM)

Great for ballasted or tilt-mounted arrays on modern homes and additions.

Needs a closer look

  • Wood shake or shingle

Fire code and structural concerns make these a poor fit — most installers won't warranty them.

  • Slate

Beautiful but brittle. Panels can be installed but require specialty crews and add significant cost.

  • Roofs older than 15 years

If your roof is nearing end-of-life, replacing it before solar avoids paying to remove and reinstall panels later.

  • Visibly damaged or leaking

Any active leaks, missing shingles, or sagging should be resolved before an installer will proceed.

Timing Matters

When should you replace your roof before going solar?

Solar panels last 25–30 years. If your roof won't, you'll end up paying to remove and reinstall panels down the road — an added $2,000–$5,000. As a rule of thumb, replace first if any of these apply:

Your roof is 15+ years old (asphalt) or shows visible wear
You have active leaks, missing shingles, or sagging areas
A recent inspection flagged less than 10 years of life left
You're planning a full renovation or addition anyway

Not sure? Your Sunlink Verified Installer inspects the roof during your site survey and gives you a clear recommendation before any panels are ordered — no pressure, no upsell.

Already Have Solar? Need a Re-Roof?

We coordinate everything.

If your panels are already installed and your roof needs work — whether from age or a storm — Sunlink coordinates the temporary panel removal, the re-roof, and reinstallation with your installer and roofing contractor. Costs vary by scope, and if a storm caused the damage, homeowners insurance often covers all or part of it. We'll help you navigate the claim.
